The Joy of Watching My Fig Tree Flourish and Thrive

Grow Little Stick, Grow!

Yeah, I'm a nerd, but I am incredibly excited about the growth of my fig tree.

Two months ago, I planted a bare-root fig tree. Honestly, it was just a stick. I planted it at the exact same time as a peach, a nectarine, a pomegranate, and two plum trees.

Within a couple of weeks, almost all of my new trees started pushing out vibrant new leaves. The only exception? My fig tree. Still just a stick.

Surviving the Foothill Freeze

Then, the late cold and snow hit us here in the foothills. I genuinely thought we were past the point of freezing because the weather had finally started to warm up. I was wrong.

All of my trees—except one of the plums—stubbornly survived the freeze and continued to grow new foliage. But not the fig. It remained just a stick.

After the freeze came an excessive amount of rain. At that point, I was absolutely sure the combination of the frost and the waterlogged soil had killed it.

Sign of Life

But I didn't give up on it. When the ground finally started to dry out, I made sure that little stick still got its regular water.

It stayed completely bare until just two weeks ago.

I was checking on the garden when I noticed a tiny, microscopic bit of green growth on the bark. Since then, it has officially started growing new leaves! It was just one solitary leaf at first, and then a few days later, another one appeared.

Now, it is producing at least one brand-new leaf every single day, and those first tiny leaves are really starting to expand.

I am so excited to see this fig tree finally take off, and I can't wait to watch it keep growing. I'm already counting down the days until I get to harvest the very first figs!
